FAQ

Why are you called the Word Pirates?
Pirates are fierce and independent renegades. We are like that. Also, if writers were teams, we would rather be Pirates than Lumberjacks or Gophers or something lame.

Who are you guys exactly? Check out the About Us page.

I want to be a Word Pirate! Can I join?
There’s a good chance. Although the group is getting full, we are still forming at this point, so if you would like to join, e-mail me about yourself and what you want to get out of a writing group.

When do you meet? We meet the second and third Thursday of every month from 7:00-9-p.m.-ish.

Where do you meet?
At Joy Lanzendorfer’s house in Petaluma.

How is the group structured?
Structure varies, but generally, we have a writing prompt that we all write on for 15-20 minutes. Then during the following month, we edit what we wrote. At the next meeting, we bring in the edited version of the exercise and read it aloud to the group. In the future, we will incorporate critique into this process. We also have delicious snacks and drinks at our meeting.

What kind of writing do you do? We focus on creative writing, primarily short stories and essays. Our goal is to get all Word Pirates producing short, publishable pieces that can be placed in everything from major magazines to small literary journals. However, we also have craft-oriented exercises designed to increase writing skills.

I’m a Word Pirate and would like a link of mine to be included under Links on the main page. How do I do that? E-mail me the link and I will add it.

I am a Word Pirate and would like to be able to post blog posts. Is that possible? That can be arranged. E-mail me

Is it true you will have a Word Pirate’s reading sometime this year? We are planning on it. Date, location TBA.

Why is this page so drab? Can’t we include some colors somewhere?
Sure! I’m a writer not a graphic designer, so if someone has some suggestions for how to liven up the design, I’m all ears.
